It is a overcrowded jail in Honduras (there were 856 prisoners officially listed on the roster for the prison and the real capability was for 500). A big fire started the night from the 14th to the 15th of February 2012, and more than 350 prisioners died. Prisoners trapped in their cells died by burning or suffocation; dozens were "burned beyond recognition". Around 475 prisoners escaped, many through the roof of the facility and others jumping over the walls of the prison to escape the fire, and that was when the prison guards reportedly shot at them. The chief of forensic medicine for the prosecutor's office stated that it would take at least three months to identify all of the victims, mainly from DNA samples.
